What is a dynamic QR code?

A dynamic QR code doesn't store the final address in its pattern. It stores a short link, such as urlhop.me/joes-menu, which forwards each person to the destination you chose. Because you control that short link, you can change the destination whenever you like and see how many people scanned it. A static QR code, by contrast, is locked to the address printed into it forever. Every QR code you create on URLHop is dynamic.

Why so many QR codes stop working

There are three usual suspects: the "free" generator deactivates the code when the trial ends; the destination website moved or went offline; or the code was static and still points to an old page. On URLHop, your QR code doesn't depend on a subscription. It doesn't expire, even on the free plan, and if the destination changes you just update the link in your dashboard.

How to change the link on a QR code that's already printed

If the code was made on URLHop: open your dashboard, open the link behind the QR code, paste the new address and save. The printed code stays the same and starts sending people to the new destination, usually within a minute. If your current QR code was made with another generator, it can't be changed from here, but you can create a URLHop QR code now so your next print run is your last.

Track QR code scans for free

Every scan counts as a visit to the link. Your dashboard shows the total plus a breakdown by day, country, device type (phone, tablet or computer) and referring site. Tip: use a different link for each piece, one for the menu and one for the flyer, and see which brings more people. The free plan keeps 30 days of history; paid plans keep from 90 days up to all-time.

Make it on-brand and print it right

On the free plan your QR code comes in classic black and white, as a PNG. From Starter, choose colors, the dot style (square, rounded or circular) and a center icon, and download an SVG too, the vector format print shops prefer. Before you

Dynamic QR code questions

Do free URLHop QR codes expire?

No. QR codes created on URLHop's free plan have no expiry date and are never switched off for lack of a subscription. They only stop if you set an expiration, deactivate or delete the link, or if it's blocked for being used in a scam.

Can I change a QR code made on another website?

No. Only whoever controls the link stored in a QR code can change where it goes, so a code from another generator can only be changed there. To avoid this next time, make your next QR code on URLHop, where you control the destination.

How many QR codes can I create for free?

Up to 100. On URLHop every short link has its own QR code, and the Free plan includes 100 links. Starter includes 1,000, and from Pro links are unlimited under our fair use policy.

What format can I download?

PNG on every plan. From Starter you can also download SVG, a vector format that stays sharp at any print size, and customize colors, dot style and a center icon.

Can I make a QR code for my WhatsApp, Instagram or Google review page?

Yes. Any web address can be the destination: your WhatsApp chat link (wa.me followed by your number with the country code), your Instagram profile, a review page or an online menu. If it changes, update the destination and the printed code keeps working.
